Colors of the Chakras

There is a tradition from ancient India of assigning each of the chakras a color from the rainbow — the same colors you’ve seen throughout this site. This makes sense, with red for the first chakras as the most materialistic or outward expression of energy and violet for the seventh as the most spiritual or inward expression of energy. For the complete list, see the chakras chart.

These colors are not the literal colors of the chakras as seen in meditation — it’s better to think of them more as a metaphor. The spiritual eye, for example, appears as field of deep blue surrounded by a ring of gold, with a silvery-white star in the center. Paying attention to these traditional colors and tuning in to them can still be helpful and fun.

Meditating on the chakras and their colors may help you to become more aware of the chakras. You might also try this: Look at a pure color and absorb the color through your eyes. Try breathing in the essence of the color. When you look at it, inhale and feel you’re drawing that color into your consciousness.

At certain times, you may feel more drawn to some colors than others. Pay attention to that, as an attraction to a particular color may suggest a need for that color’s energy, as a craving for a particular food may indicate elements that are lacking in your diet.

All colors are beautiful when they are pure, just as all the chakras become spiritualized when we emphasize their inner side, their pure side, rather than their outward manifestation.
